One Ingredient Watermelon Candy

Now you are probably wondering, how in the world I make watermelon candy with just one ingredient. As you may have guessed that ingredient is watermelon. But I don’t add a thing to it. It’s what I do to the watermelon to make it into a yummy sweet candy like treat.

Last week, I shared about dehydrating tomatoes from our garden. While I was on a roll, I decided to dehydrate part of the watermelon I had sitting on my counter.

You see, at our house even a small watermelon can sometimes not be eaten up by the time it goes bad. So, when I  have a nice sized one, I like to cut up half of it for fresh eating and then make watermelon candy with the rest.

How to Make Watermelon Candy

Making watermelon candy is simply just dehydrated watermelon. I know it sound kinda funny, to suck all the water out of a watermelon. After all, water is half of this fruits name. But once you get the extra water out, you end up with a yummy sweet and slightly taffy like candy.

I start out with 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick watermelon slices. Don’t go too thin because the watermelon really shrinks down. A  little thicker and it takes longer to dehydrate. Too thin and it can be hard to get off the dehydrator trays.

I set my dehydrator to 135 degrees and let it go overnight or about 12 hours. Then I will check to see if the watermelon is nice and crisp without any moisture pockets. You want them nice and dry.

Storing Watermelon Candy

To store the watermelon candy, I wait until it has cooled and then place it in a zipper bag. I store the watermelon candy in the refrigerator, just to make sure it doesn’t draw moisture. We alway end up eating it within a week or two, so it keeps really well in the refrigerator. If you need to store it longer, place it into the freezer, just so it doesn’t get sticky.

  1. What a great idea, Shelly. I love this! 🙂

I definitely want to try making watermelon candy with my food dehydrator someday. Oh, and we have the opposite problem when it comes to watermelon. I can’t cut it fast enough for my kids, and with seven people eating it…it’s gone and someone is usually missing it once there’s none left.
