You Need to Know This Quick Way to Sift Dry Ingredients

When I was young and would help my great grandma when baking, I used a sifter to sift the flour and other dry ingredients. It was fun you as a kid, you put all the dry ingredients into the sifter and turn the handle. It would magically come out the bottom and be nice and fluffy and mixed.

Sifting ingredients through a sifter or a strainer can be messy and take some time, especially when you are making big batches of recipes. That why I don’t use either anymore. Instead, I use a little kitchen tool you probably already own that does the job just as good and in the same bowl that you are making the recipe in. Leaving less mess to clean up and fewer dishes to wash too.

But when I’m busy and need to get my sifting done a little faster I turn to this quick way to sift dry ingredients. You don’t need a sifter, you just need one little tool you probably already own.

I had always had a love-hate relationship with my sifters. The sifters I owned always became rusty and then needed to be thrown out. Because who wants little pieces of rust mixed in with your flour. Not me or you I’m sure. It was frustrating  and after the last sifter I owned turned rusty, I just didn’t purchase another one. I just didn’t sift the dry ingredients at all.

I also used to use a strainer. It worked well but can be a little time consuming and messy too. The flour can fly around and I’ve had trouble finding good quality metal strainers that can hold up over time.

Many of the strainers I’ve owned, the metal mesh would start to come out of the frame which was frustrating and it made them useless once that happened.

But when I learned I could sift with a kitchen tool I already owned I gave it a try. I couldn’t believe how well it worked. I was hooked and never would I need to purchase a sifter that would become rusty again.

The little kitchen tool I’m talking about is a whisk. Yes, that’s right a whisk can work just like a sifter. It can save you time and you won’t need to own another tool to sift with.

I made this quick video to show you how great a whisk can work to break up clumps in the dry ingredients and mix the ingredients together really well.

Why I Like Using a Whisk to Sift

It easy. I don’t have to measure the ingredients into a sifter, then sift them into the bowl. I just place the ingredients into the bowl and whisk until they are all blended.

It works great for larger amounts. With a sifter or a strainer you are limited to the amount that will fit into it. With a whisk, you can sift the whole batch at one time.

It works great for baking mixes. A whisk works great when I’m making baking mixes to use later. It really mixes the ingredients well. You don’t end up with too much of one ingredient in a bag of the baking mix than the rest. I can make a big batch of brownie mix or pancake mix in one bowl.

After mixing I can divide them into recipe sized serving bags. Which makes using your own homemade mixes so much easier.

The next time a recipe calls for sifting grab your whisk (affiliate link) and use it instead of a sifter or a strainer. It works great and it’s an inexpensive kitchen tool you don’t want to be without.

Other than whipping eggs what else do you use your whisk for?
