Menu Plan Monday, Cooking at Home to Save Money

It’s Monday and you know that means it’s time to get ready for the new week. It’s time to make our meal plan for this week.

This week our menu plan is super easy. I’ll be making a few dishes from the freezer and the rest of the week will be easy family favorites.

My son really, really, loves hamburgers and always wants to get a hamburger out for dinner. Which can get really expensive. It’s super hard for me to eat out at a sit-down restaurant and pay $10 for a burger and fries. When I know I can make them at home for a fraction of the cost.

This month I started putting hamburgers on the menu plan. He has been really happy and hasn’t asked to eat hamburgers out once, recently. Making them at home worked. Each time we eat them at home we save at least $15, if not more.

Pizza is on our menu this week, along with the easy sesame chicken, which has become a new favorite dish for us. If you haven’t tried it yet, the link is below. It’s really easy to make and very good.

  1. How funny that your son wants to eat hamburgers all the time! I’m glad that he’s happy eating them at home…mine always wants to go out to McDonald’s, but none of the rest of us likes it too much.

    I’m glad to hear that you found a good sesame chicken recipe…I’ve been trying out different Asian recipes to make at home instead of eating take-out, but have only been successful with 2 of them. I definitely need to put this recipe on my to-make list!

    1. Oh, McDonalds is my least favorite place to eat. I’m glad my son likes to eat them at home too. So much easier on the budget.

      The sesame chicken is definitely a keeper. I make quite a few asian recipes at home. I worked in a Chinese food restaurant when I was in high school and I learned by watching the cooks prepare the dishes. I hope you have good luck with the sesame chicken recipe.

      All this talk about asian food has got me craving egg rolls. I need to make a batch for the freezer so we can have them as a side dish to our stir fry or sesame chicken.

  2. I read somewhere that the average American eats 3 Burgers a WEEK! (you can easily google it on PBS Science). If that’s true, making them at home would sure add up to a LOT of savings in a year! Great post : )
