MYO:Homemade Oatmeal Packages

This is my recipe for homemade oatmeal packages. These are like the ones from the store. I don’t remember where I got this recipe originally, I think from a freezer cookbook but I am not sure. I have been making these for quite some time now. Here’s the recipe:

Homemade Oatmeal Packages

Ingredients
3 cups Quick Oats (or regular oats)
Salt
Small baggies

Put 1 cup of Oats in a blender or food processor and grind until powdered.

In each baggie place 1/4 cup quick oats, 2 Tablespoons of powdered oats, and 1/8 teaspoon of salt. If you like your oatmeal sweetened you can add 1 tablespoon of sugar. We don’t put sugar in ours.

Now make your packages into different flavors. We like to make:

Apple-cinnamon: 2T of chopped dried apples and 1/4t cinnamon

Strawberry: We add about 2T of chopped dried strawberries

Cinnamon-Raisin: 2T Raisins with 1/4t cinnamon

Brown Sugar: 1T brown sugar with 1/4t cinnamon

Apricot: 2T diced dried apricots

We have made some with dried mangoes and papayas. If you like them plain you don’t have to add any sugar or fruit. If you want more fiber add some wheat germ to each package. My kids even like to swirl in jam or yogurt.

To serve: Empty package into a bowl. Add 3/4 cup water to bowl and stir. Microwave for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Then Enjoy. We usually add a little milk to ours. If the oatmeal is too thick try adding more water before heating or if it is too runny use less water.

We hope you enjoy making these.

    1. We really love these. Making these helps to keep the sugar out of them. Even the low-sugar ones from the store still have more sugar than we want. The kids do most of the work putting them together. I just help get everything set up.

  1. I love this idea! I use oatmeal all the time for my youngest son while he will still eat it. Thank you for stopping by my blog! Btw, I followed you on Twitter 🙂

    1. I am glad you like the oatmeal package idea. We have been making them for a while and both my kids will eat oatmeal for breakfast during the week. Making these helps us to control the sugar that goes into them. They are really easy to make and it makes preparing oatmeal for breakfast a snap. Thanks for following me on twitter.
