Sun Catcher, Crafts for Kids

Looking for an easy to do summer fun project for the kids. These sun catchers for kids are a fun project that can be done inside or outside. If you have food coloring, glue and a container lid you have everything needed to make them.

I love to keep my kid’s actively creating in the summer with fun kid’s crafts. I love to nurture their creative sides. Both of them tend to lean more towards their artistic side rather than their book side. So in the summer when we take a little break from the book learning, I like to spend more time with them creating.

I turned my kids loose with my Pinterest account and let them search for some craft ideas they wanted to create. These sun catchers were one craft that caught their eye. I love that this craft only takes a few things to make them and we already had the items around the house too.

Before you set out to make this craft you’ll want to collect these supplies,

Making the Sun Catcher

Step one, carefully pour the glue into the lid. Fill the bottom of the lid. You can fill it to the top like we did but it will take longer to dry. But don’t overflow it like I did. It’s easy to do so pour slowly especially if you have a large container of glue like we had.

Step two, Let the kids add a drop or two of food coloring to the lid full of glue. Start with just one or two.

Step Three, Use the toothpicks to make designs with the drops of food coloring. Note, the lines will blur or run some as the glue dries, so there won’t be any crisp lines. We thought it added to the beauty of the design.

Step Four, probably the hardest part, wait for the glue to dry. We put ours outside in the sun three days in a row to get it dried. If you only fill the lids half way, I’m sure they will dry more quickly.

Step Five, carefully peel the sun catcher out of the lid. Be careful they can be a little brittle.

Step Six, With the hole punch, punch a hole in the sun catcher where you want to hang it from. Be careful as you punch the hole. One of ours was a little brittle and it cracked.

Step Seven, Thread yarn or string through the hole you just made and tie it into a loop to hang your sun catcher in the window.

This project for the kids was really easy to do. I think the hardest part of the whole project was waiting for the glue to fully dry. We filled our lids to the very top. Since the lids had a groove on the edge, the edge was thicker and took much longer to dry.

I think if we had a lid that didn’t have a groove deeper around the edge these would have dried more evenly. Be sure to look for lids without a deeper groove on the edge for your mold.

The way the color bleed as the glue dry added to the beauty of the finished sun catchers. At first the kids were a little disappointed to see their creations changing, but in the end we all decided they look more beautiful with the colors spread out more.
