DIY Foaming Hand Soap

How to make your own foaming hand soap refill with just two ingredients. It only takes a few minutes to do.

We love the foaming hand soap at our house. It not only lasts longer than the regular soap but also washes off hands more easily. Which is great for kids, who don’t always take the time to rinse all the soap off their hands.

Now purchasing the foaming soap refills can get a bit expensive. But if you know how to mix up your own foaming hand soap, you can save a bundle. Especially if you go through lots of soap like we do at our house.

You don’t need anything fancy to make your own foaming hand soap. Just three things,

Make your own foaming hand soap, I can show you how and it only takes a few minutes too.

  • A foaming dispenser, I use one I purchased with the foaming hand soap in it
  • Soap or Shampoo
  • Water

I’ve made a video to show how to make your own foaming hand soap but I’ve also included the instructions below. Just in case watching videos isn’t your thing.

How to make your own foaming hand soap

Open your empty foaming hand soap dispenser and add in the regular soap. I use the Softsoap, I purchase at Costco or cheap shampoo, that I can get for less than a dollar a bottle, when it’s on sale. Either will work well, the shampoo smells really good too.

Squirt the soap into the empty soap dispenser, fill to about 1/2 inch depth of soap. Just fill the bottom and have it come up the side about a half inch. This should be plenty. If you don’t want your soap as strong, add a little less.

Now add in enough warm water to fill the soap dispenser about 3/4 full. You don’t want to go all the way to the top, if you do the foaming pumper won’t work quite right.

Put the plunger back into the bottle, secure the top and shake gently. If you shake the bottle too hard, you’ll end up with a foaming soapy mess, trying to push out the top. You can also skip the shaking part if you use warm water and let it sit for a bit. The soap will distribute into the water over a little time.

Use as you would any other foaming hand soap and enjoy thinking about the money you’re saving by mixing up your own foaming hand soap.

This is just one of the ways we save money everyday around our house. If you want more money saving ideas be sure to check out the other posts in the Ways to Save Money series.
