Growing Rhubarb and Recipes

We’ve been having some great weather around here. It was so, so, nice. All the nice weather has been making the garden really take off. I was looking over my rhubarb just a few days ago and it’s almost time to harvest a few stalks.

Rhubarb is something my family has grown in the garden, ever since I can remember. My mom used to make rhubarb crisp with it. We always had an overabundance of rhubarb to share. I’ve found it’s fairly easy to grow, at least here where I live.

Rhubarb for me is the perfect plant. It needs a little water and compost, then produces very nicely. It dies off in the fall and starts growing in the spring. It almost takes care of itself.

It’s also super easy to harvest. Just grab a stalk and give a gentle twist. No need to find something to cut with. In fact its better if you don’t cut them.

Do you grow rhubarb? Here's a few ideas to prepare rhubarb. With the rhubarb almost ready to harvest, I’m looking forward to making a few of our favorite things with it soon. I know I’ll make at least one batch of the rhubarb custard crisp. It’s a favorite recipe we received from my kid’s great grandma. I also have made an upside down cake with rhubarb and dairy free roasted rhubarb ice cream. So many good recipes to make with rhubarb.

I think, I’ll need to make more rhubarb jam too. It’s so good and we are almost out. The roasted rhubarb jam is easy to make too and has a different yummy flavor to it, since it’s roasted. But then there’s roasted strawberry rhubarb jam too. So many good rhubarb jam recipes, I might have to make them all.

We had some really great gardening post shared last week too. There are also so many good gardening ideas from all of you. Here’s my favorite ones from last week, The features from this past week's Tuesday Garden Party 1. Valerie from Loving My Heart and Home shared about planting time in their garden.

2. Gently Joy from Gentle Joy Photography shared about her chipmunk troubles. I know they are really rodents, but they are very cute ones.

3. The Farmers Wife from Grace Garden and Homestead, shared about rebuilding their greenhouse that burned down. I would love to have a greenhouse someday.

4. Cecilia from My Thrift Store Addiction shared her garden bench makeover. Going from a drab rust to a fabulous bright green. What a great looking bench.

5. This potting shed is just too cute from Donna of The Country Nest. I would love to have one too.

Can’t wait to see what you have to share this week!

Sharing is caring!

  1. Our rhubarb is just barely peaking out of the ground. I’m going to have to come back to check out your recipes once I start harvesting. Yours looks so lovely!
    Blessings,
