Tuesday Garden Party for September 1st

Welcome to this week’s Tuesday Garden Party! We received some much need rain this past weekend. It was so nice not having to water. I made sure to pick all of the tomatoes that were somewhat ripe. I didn’t want them splitting with all the rain.

A few of my Roma tomatoes are a little different in shape. They almost look like a pepper shape. I think I might save the seeds from these to try to grow pepper shaped Roma tomatoes for next year.

This container of cherry tomatoes is off of one plant, in one picking. It’s the tomato plant the kids planted in their herb garden. It really liked the full sun on the front deck.

We finally have one zucchini on our zucchini plants. I planted them in June, but they took a while to take off. Our first zucchini has been chewed on by a slug too. You would think with all the dry weather we had this summer I wouldn’t have any slugs left in the garden.

My spearmint had lots of flowers on it and was getting spindly. I cut it back thinking it was done for the year. But here it is coming back. So we will have mint for a while more to make mint water and lemon mint water.

Happy September 1! I love this time of year when marigolds and zinnias are in full bloom in my garden. We’ve had a surprisingly nice last week of August.

The weather has been cool during the day and even cooler at night. It’s certainly not typical for this time of year in Eastern Iowa, but I love it. I’ve had to wear sweatshirts a few times this past week! My tomatoes, on the other hand, would really like a few hot days! It looks like we will get them this week, though, and I’m definitely not complaining about the nice weather we’ve had this summer. What a weird year for us!

This week's Tuesday Garden Party

In my garden this week, I harvested dried Jacob’s Cattle Beans, dug more potatoes for storing over winter, and am excitedly watching my pumpkins grow. I’ve got several beautiful white Caspar Pumpkins {thanks to Jami for growing them last year!} and four huge Dills Atlantic Giants growing. I’ve never grown such big pumpkins so I’m really excited about them. They’re not as big as the pictures on their websites, but they’re still pretty darn awesome. My garden is winding down and I’m about ready for it to be done.
