Here we are at Christmas Eve, I hope you are all set for Christmas Day. I know some of you are struggling with making ends meet and might be feeling like you didn’t do enough for Christmas. I know I’ve struggled with that feeling too.

This year we really simplified Christmas. We kept the presents to two for each child and for my husband and myself. We didn’t exchange gifts with extended family on my side or my husband’s side. It was nice not having to shop and be out and about so much. But I also have this nagging feeling I didn’t do enough.

But the truth be told, I did do enough. It’s just that nagging consumer voice in my head saying my kids need more to be happy, my husband needs those expensive things he is saving up for. But it was my son this year that really reminded me of what is important.

He asked if everyone was coming to our house for Christmas and if we would extend our table out so everyone would have a place to sit and if we would be making all the cookies and candy to spread out on the table for everyone to enjoy. That is what my son was most looking forward to. The time with family and sharing the things we have with them.

While I won’t kid you, he is looking forward to receiving gifts, having people over and sharing the things we made ourselves for them was what he was most concerned with and it makes my heart happy.

Remember if you are sitting here on Christmas Eve thinking you didn’t do enough, give your family your time and your presence instead of worrying if you purchased enough presents for them.

Take time to put away the electronic devices and really spend time as a family. What your kids and spouse really want is you. You will build memories with your family that will last a lifetime which is so much better than the plastic toys that will be just be a memory by next Christmas.

Go enjoy your family and have a Merry Christmas!

  1. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas celebration tomorrow, Shelly! I agree that Christmas isn’t about all the gifts, etc… It’s about Jesus. I think this year more than ever before, I’m in awe that the God of the Universe sent His precious Son to save us, sinners. What amazing love!

  2. Thanks for this encouragement Shelly! I do get discouraged every year, like I’m not doing enough, but then I see the clutter of toys that is leftover by summertime and then I regret buying too much.

It’s also hard to hear my kids whine about all the fun things their friends got for Christmas…like the 4 year-old neighbor that got a tablet as one of her gifts…they feel badly that they don’t have the same thing.

I know that we are doing well with our kids, but sometimes you just need to hear someone confirm that…thanks for being that voice Shelly 🙂
