How to Make Oat Flour, The Easy Way
Got recipes that call for oat flour? Instead of buying it at the store, why not make it yourself? It’s easy to do. Here’s how to make oat flour at home.
What is Oat Flour? And is Oat Flour Gluten Free?
Oat flour is flour made from ground oats. It’s easy to make at home and is a great gluten-free flour and so much less expensive than buying oat flour too.
Since it’s so easy, why not save the money and make it at home yourself?
Can You Use Oat Flour Instead of Regular Flour?
You can use oat flour instead of regular flour, cup for cup. I’ve used homemade oat flour in our pancake recipe and waffles, with no problems. But some recipes may give mixed results when substituting all the all purpose flour for oat flour.
To be certain it’s best to use recipes developed to use oat flour to be safe.
Which Oats to Use
Making oat flour at home is super simple to do. But you’ll need to decide if you’ll be using steel cut oats or oat groats to make oat flour. Or if you want to use rolled oats.
Oat Groats or Steel-Cut Oats
If you are starting with oat groats or steel-cut oats, you’ll need a grain mill to make your oat flour.
If you own a grain mill, then you can make oat flour with it. Using oat groats with a grain mill produces a great oat flour.
But if you don’t have a grain mill, you can use rolled oats.
Rolled Oats
If you’ll be starting with rolled oats, you can make oat flour in a blender or a food processor.
I made oat flour in the video below with my food processor. It’s pretty quick when using a food processor. Just be sure to run it until the oats are very fine.
But if you don’t have a food processor, you can use a high quality blender like a Vitamix or Blendtec blender. Either will work great for making oat flour.

How to Make Oat Flour in a Few Easy Steps
What you’ll need
A Blender, Food Processor, or Grain Mill (depending on which oats you are starting with)
Rolled Oats, Steel-Cut Oats, or Oat Groats (if using a blender or food processor use the rolled oats.)
An Airtight Container or Sealable Storage Bag
Rolled Oats Method
If you don’t have a grain mill start with rolled oats and use this method to make oat flour.
1. Measure your rolled oats into a food processor or blender.
2. Process on high speed until the oats are ground into a fine flour.
3. Place your homemade oatmeal flour into an airtight container or bag and remove any extra air. Seal and store on your pantry shelf up to 3 months.
Oat Groats or Steel-Cut Oats Method
If you have a grain mill start with oat groats or steel-cut oats and run them through the grain mill.
1. Load your oats into the hopper or container for your grain mill.
2. Adjust the setting of grinding to fine.
3. Turn on or crank to process the oats.
4. Place your homemade oatmeal flour into an airtight container or bag and remove any extra air. Seal and store on your pantry shelf up to 3 months.
Homemade Oatmeal Flour Tips
Just a few tips you need to know when making your own oat flour at home.
1 cup of rolled oat doesn’t equal 1 cup of oat flour. Be sure to grind a little more than a cup of rolled oats if you need a cup of oat flour.
Add a couple of extra tablespoons of rolled oats to be sure. Or use a heaping cupful to grind into oat flour.
Use your homemade oat flour in recipes that call for oat flour. If you use oat flour in place of wheat flour in recipe, it could have mixed results.
But oat flour can be substituted one cup oat flour to one cup wheat flour. And I’ve found that oat flour works great in muffins, pancakes, waffles and cookies.
